The Better Business Bureau has recently learned of a secret shopper scam run by “A C T Research Group,” claiming to be part of a campaign under a contract with the Federal Trade Commission and the Better Business Bureau. BBB and FTC have NO connection with this campaign. Please note that the scam is unrelated to ACT Research Co., LLC in Columbus, IN.
Consumers report receiving letters asking them to participate in a program to evaluate the MoneyPak reloadable prepaid card offered by Green Dot Corporation. A check is enclosed with the letter, and the recipient is told to deposit the check and use the funds for the secret shopper campaign.
If you receive this letter, BBB advises you not to deposit the check, because it is likely fraudulent and will not clear. A victim who deposits a fraudulent check in their bank account may be responsible for the amount of the bad check and may have their account closed.
As always, the BBB recommends NOT providing any personal identifying information to any company with which you are not familiar. If an offer seems convincing, obtain the company's complete name, address and phone number and contact the BBB to check out the company BEFORE providing or confirming any information. In addition, if you have been a victim of a scam, please don’t keep it a secret. Notify the police and the BBB.
