October 15, 2010, Milwaukee, Wis. – On Saturday, October 23rd, the Wisconsin Better Business Bureau will host “ShredFest” – a free document shredding event that helps people protect themselves from identity theft – simultaneously in three Wisconsin cities.

The events will be held in Appleton, Madison and West Allis. See below for locations and times. There is a limit of 3 boxes per car. In addition, the BBB will be collecting and recycling any unused cell phones. Wireless Alliance will clean the data from the phones before they are recycled.

Appleton
At AnchorBank-Darboy Branch
W3160 County Road KK
From 8:30 am to 11 am

Madison
At AnchorBank
216 Cottage Grove Road
From 7:30 am to 10:30 am

West Allis
At WaterStone Bank
10101 W. Greenfield Avenue
From 8:30 am to 11 am

The events are part of a larger, national shredding day hosted by BBB offices throughout the United States. Many BBB offices – including the Wisconsin BBB – host shredding events twice annually. The last time the Wisconsin BBB hosted ShredFest – in April 2010 – it collected almost 52,000 pounds of material, the second highest total collected by any BBB.

Shredding personal information is an important first step in identity theft protection. In fact, most identity theft cases occur after personal information has been lost or stolen. The Wisconsin BBB encourages consumers to dispose of unneeded personal documents responsibly.

“This is largely a crime of access,” said Randall Hoth, president/CEO of the Wisconsin Better Business Bureau.  “Our goal here is to make the information less accessible and empower people to be their own first line of defense against identity theft.”
